Benavidez, Gonzalez earn top lifter awards at Dilley meet.
Cotulla’s Cowgirls continued their dominant powerlifting streak, earning another team title, this time at the Dilley Girls Invitational Meet on Wednesday, January 31.
“I am very proud of the hard work the girls have been putting in,” CHS Head Coach Lupe Hernandez said. “They are making their six a.m. workouts pay off.”
The Cowgirls saw two lifters earn accolades at the event as Karla Benavidez won the Best Lightweight Lifter Award and Abby Gonzalez captured the Best Heavyweight Lifter Award.
This marks the third meet in a row the Cowgirls have taken the team title at and the squad saw 21 of its 27 lifters finish in the top five in their respective weight classes.
Eight lifters won their divisions as Alessandra Garcia, Quiana Mendez, Benavidez, Kate Guzman, Jocelyn Ramirez, Gonzalez, Emily Velasquez and Reychel Narvaiz all earned the top spots in their divisions.
Eloyandra Zertuche, Nathania Sada, Elyssa Gonzalez and Kamryn Obregon all took second in their respective divisions while Alejandra Chapa, Sareen Ramirez, Nayeli Flores, Quiana Allen and Shizuka Roath finished third in their weight classes.
Raeanna Galindo, Remmya Diaz, Randi Garcia and Bella Linares all finished fourth while Victoria Rodriguez was fifth, respectively.
Jade Lozano and Kayle Guzman were sixth, Viviana Nieto took seventh and Reanne Diaz was eighth in their divisions.
Cotulla’s Cowgirls will return to action on Wednesday, February 14 at Natalia in the final meet before regional competition on Thursday, February 29 in Edinburg.
