LA SALLE COUNTY candidates for election as sheriff (L-R) Constable Hector Ramirez, former Sheriff Miguel Rodriguez and incumbent Sheriff Anthony Zertuche appeared at a forum hosted by the Brush Country Chamber of Commerce in the AB Alexander Convention Center on Tuesday evening, February 13, taking turns to discuss their public service record, accomplishments and goals if elected. Ramirez and Zertuche are on the Democratic Party primary ballot on March 5; Rodriguez is the sole Republican Party candidate. Those who prevail in the primaries will be on the general election ballot in November. Topics for discussion at the forum included handling staff and managing a budget, responding to and helping serve the federal and regional management of the immigration crisis at the US – Mexico border, inter-agency cooperation, community policing, and intervention in burgeoning drug-related crime and local drug use. The candidates also discussed their approach to law enforcement and criminal investigation, as well as their management of internal investigations, policies and procedures they support and those with which they differ in opinion. School security was a further discussion topic, with each candidate making references to improving law enforcement relationships with school administration and students, and involvement in community activities to enhance public understanding and appreciation of local law enforcement coverage. Questions for the forum had been submitted in advance by local constituents, and included some inquiries into the sheriff’s office capabilities and response to a continuing crisis of smugglers and undocumented immigrants causing damage to ranch properties in South Texas.
