Pearsall jumped out to a brief first period lead but could not sustain it as Sinton surged ahead en route to a 97-70 bi-district basketball playoff win Monday evening, February 19 in Freer.
The Pirates outscored Pearsall 24-10 in the second quarter as they broke the game open by halftime and led 47-26 at the break.
The Mavericks found a much better pace in the second half but were still outscored by six in the half.
Sinton outpointed Pearsall 28-20 in the third while the Mavericks were able to hit some outside shots and convert some inside baskets in the fourth where they outscored the Pirates 24-22.
“I am proud of my boys for fighting all four quarters and not giving up,” PHS Head Coach Jeffrey Viesca said. “It just came down to matchups, and Sinton had the advantage with their size and athleticism. They were able to get points in the paint by posting us up and cherry picking all game.
“Our guys never quit, they still managed to score 70 points on Sinton with their starters still in the game most of the fourth quarter.”
The Pirates, 19-14 overall and 11-0 in District 30-4A, won their 13th game in a row after a 7-14 start to their season. The team’s last loss was on December 28 at Boerne, when the team dropped a 52-51 decision to the Greyhounds.
Pearsall’s 70 points in the losing effort marked the most points allowed by Sinton in 15 games, when the Pirates fell 73-41 to Boerne Champion.
The Mavericks close out their season with a 17-19 mark overall and 5-7 fourth place record in 29-4A.
