MAVERICK BASEBALL CLASSIC
SA Christian hands Mavs only tourney loss in rematch from a year ago.
Pearsall went 3-1 in action at the annual Maverick Baseball Classic, falling to San Antonio Christian 3-1 on Saturday in their only loss at the event.
The Mavericks sit 4-1 on the season, having opened the year with a 13-11 win over Crystal City on Tuesday, February 20 prior to competing at the tournament.
“Overall, the first week of the season has been a good one,” PHS Head Coach Ray Talamantes said. “We are excited for the rest of the season to play out. We are in a tough district but our guys are confident that we can go out and compete every single game.”
Pearsall was dominant in its first two wins at the tournament, blanking Poteet 10-0 in their opener on Thursday, February 22 and routing Dilley 14-2 in action on Friday. The Mavericks then held off a surge by San Antonio West Campus Friday afternoon, holding on to claim a 10-9 victory in that outing.
In a reduced format on Saturday, the Mavericks took on Christian in one of only two games that day, dropping a narrow 3-1 decision to the Lions in a rematch of last year’s title game.
In action on Tuesday prior to the tournament, Pearsall held off the Javelinas in a wild, high-scoring affair.
“The game had several lead changes throughout,” Talamantes said. “But we were able to pull this one out.”
Pearsall returned to action Tuesday evening as they hosted the Antonian Apaches. They will be in action this weekend at the South Texas Slugfest in Hondo. Action at the event begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday.

PEARSALL first baseman JJ Dominguez snares a throw from pitcher Diego Carrasco on a pick-off attempt during tournament action against Poteet on Thursday evening, February 22. The Mavs won the game 10-0 and finished 3-1 at the event.
