Martinez is second; Garcia notches qualifying lift to earn bids to THSPA state championships.

Pearsall will send a pair of athletes to the state powerlifting competition after both earned qualifying totals to advance during action at the Region V, Division 2 Powerlifting Meet at the JK Northway Coliseum in Kingsville on Friday, March 8.
Kingston Martinez took second overall in the 165-lb. weight class to earn a state berth while Mark Garcia placed ninth in the 114-lb. division but posted a state qualifying total weight to earn a spot at the state meet.
“Both boys competed well,” PHS Head Coach Erica Tellez said. “They both stayed focused on their individual goals and were able to reach them to qualify for state.”
Martinez posted a total lift of 1,585 lbs. His lifts included 600 lbs. in the squat, 385 lbs. in the bench press and 600 lbs. in the deadlift.
Garcia recorded a total weight of 850 lbs. to secure his state spot. His lifts included 325 lbs. in the squat, 200 lbs. in the bench press and 325 lbs. in the deadlift.
Also competing at the event were Marc Ramirez and Ryan Hughes. Hughes was sixth in the super heavyweight division with a total lift of 1,485 lbs. Marc Ramirez was also 11th in the 114-lb. division with a total lift of 725 lbs.
The Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championships will be in Abilene at the Taylor County Expo Center on Friday, March 22 for Divisions 2 and 3 and Saturday, March 23 for Divisions 1 and 4.
