PEARSALL SOFTBALL
Pearsall dropped two of three district outings prior to the Easter holiday break, falling to Carrizo Springs and Devine while knocking off Pleasanton as they remained on the edge of playoff contention this week in softball action.
“We took a tough loss against Carrizo, but in the end, we came together and worked hard to gain another win against Pleasanton,” PHS Head Coach Melissa Sanchez said. “These girls are working hard every day, we face some tough situations, however, my girls are capable of overcoming every challenge faced.”
In a high-scoring affair, the Lady Wildcats pulled it out to take a 17-15 decision over Pearsall. The team then topped Pleasanton Monday evening, March 25 before losing a 15-4 decision to Devine on Thursday.
“We lost to Devine but I see it as a blessing in disguise,” the coach said. “It opens our eyes to the flaws we must and will perfect. We will be coming back stronger next game.”
Pearsall’s bounce-back 12-11 win over Pleasanton came with some drama as the team rallied in their final at-bat to take the win.
A four-run first and three-run third put Pearsall ahead 8-2 in the early going. The Lady Eagles rallied late, however, scoring eight runs over the final three innings to build an 11-8 advantage going into Pearsall’s final at-bat.
A three-run seventh sealed the win as the Lady Mavs walked off with the 12-11 win. Pearsall had 17 hits and only two errors in the contest.
Devine did the same to the Lady Mavs, surging ahead in the early going and taking 7-1 lead after two innings.
Pearsall added three runs in the third to cut it to 7-4 but the Arabians countered with four runs at the bottom of the stanza to surge ahead 11-4. Four more runs at the bottom of the fourth saw Devine go up 15-4 and when the Lady Mavs couldn’t answer in the fifth, Devine took the run-rule victory.
Pearsall was limited to the four runs on only three hits and the team committed six errors. The Arabians belted out 13 hits and had only three errors.
The Lady Mavs dropped to 3-4 in the district standings following the week of play but were aided in the standings as Uvalde notched their first league win with a 10-9 decision over Carrizo Springs.
That decision kept Pearsall in a tie for fourth in the standings with the Lady Wildcats.
Floresville is unbeaten at 7-0 in 29-4A play while Somerset sits second at 4-2. Following an 0-2 start in league play, Devine has surged into second place at 5-2.
Pearsall will have a tough stretch coming up as they played host to Somerset Tuesday evening. They are off this Friday before hosting Floresville on Tuesday, April 9. The Lady Mavs can close some ground in the final district stretch as they close at Uvalde, at home against Carrizo Springs and at Pleasanton.
