CLASS 3A BO-DISTRICT SOFTBALL
Cowgirls blank West Campus 9-0 to earn second straight bi-district championship.
In her first ever playoff appearance, freshman Christlyn Munoz tossed a three-hit shutout and the Cowgirls belted out 15 hits in a methodical 9-0 shutout of San Antonio West Campus to win their second straight bi-district championship last Thursday, April 25 at the South San Sports Complex in San Antonio.
Cotulla now moves on to the area round where they will take on Columbus in a best-of-three area playoff series beginning on Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m. in Kenedy. Game two will also be in Kenedy on Saturday, May 4 at 12 p.m. with a third game, if needed, beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of the second game.
In what proved to be a methodical rout, Cotulla started slowly but picked up steam in cruising to the 9-0 victory last week. The Cowgirls took a quick 1-0 first inning lead and it built to 4-0 by the fourth. Cotulla then put things away with five runs over the final two innings to close the contest.

Munoz tossed a gem in her first career playoff outing, going all seven innings, allowing no runs on only three hits and struck out seven. She also had only a pair of walks.
Offensively, the Cowgirls struggled to find any consistency until midway through the contest.
“We were definitely having some trouble adjusting to their pitcher,” CHS Head Coach George Martinez said. “Once we get our bats going, however, we are very capable of scoring runs quickly.
“We have a lot of speed once we get on base, and we definitely use that to our advantage.”
Cotulla was solid behind Munoz, however, as the defense allowed the bats to come around by keeping the Lady Cougars’ offense in check throughout the night.
“Our defense was solid, although we did struggle at times with our pitch placement,” the coach said. “We have all week to clean up some things and be ready for Friday at 6 p.m.”
Senior Hailey Gonzales led the offense as she went three for four at the plate with a double and two RBI. Sophomores Alyna Flores and Bella Linares both went two for three, combining for four hits, two runs and two RBI.

Jasmine De La Garza was two for four with a pair of runs scored while EJ Zertuche went two for five at the plate with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Seniors Isabella Malacara and Izabella Carrizales and junior Reanne Sanchez all collected hits as well for Cotulla while freshman Sienna Arevalo scored a pair of runs.
The Cowgirls belted out 15 hits and committed three errors while limiting West Campus to only three hits and forced them into five errors on the night.
Cotulla’s area playoff series is a rematch of their playoff contest last year when the Lady Cardinals ended the Cowgirls’ season via a 15-1, 9-0 sweep.
Columbus enters the contest with an 18-7 overall mark and 12-2 record in District 25-3A.
Their only league losses are to Class 3A number two state-ranked Halletsville. Aside from its losses to Halletsville, the Lady Cardinals outscored their district opposition 124-24. Columbus was outscored 28-5 in two losses to the district champion Lady Brahmas.
