Frio commissioner, Dist. 23 congressional candidates on ballots
Frio County voters are heading to the polls this week to pick their Democratic Party candidate for commissioner in Precinct 1.
In both Frio and La Salle counties, voters are also choosing their Republican nominee for the office of US congressman in District 23, where incumbent Rep. Tony Gonzales faces party challenger Brandon Herrera for a place on the ticket in November.
The run-off election began Monday, May 20, and will run through Friday, May 24, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Frio County Conference Office at 410 South Pecan Street; and at the La Salle County Elections Office on Front Street in downtown Cotulla.
In Frio County, incumbent Comm. Joe Vela earned 388 votes in the March primaries, surpassing challengers Luis Cuellar, who earned 263 votes, and Humberto “Humby” Gonzales, who earned 154 votes. However, Vela did not earn the required 50% plus one vote to secure the nomination for the general election in November.
The March tally put Vela and Cuellar into the run-off.
As of Monday evening this week, records showed that 107 of the eligible 2,375 registered voters in the precinct had cast ballots.
Election Day is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Voters registered for Box 1 will cast their ballots at the Frio County Conference Room; Box 2 at the Pearsall Housing Authority at 501 West Medina Street.
The winner in the Frio run-off faces independent candidate Vickie “Coach” Camacho in November.
