Tired Old Glory

Friday, June 14, was Flag Day in the United States, celebrating the Stars and Stripes, and American Legion Post 409 in Cotulla hosted a ceremony with the members of Girl Scout Troop 91058 to retire flags that have become worn or damaged beyond use over time. Post Commander Joe Sada instructed the scouts in proper handling of the flag, how to identify a flag that needs to be retired, and how properly to dispose of a damaged flag by burning. The scouts helped lower an old flag at the American Legion Hall on Hwy 97 and replaced it with a new one. The commander was joined by Vice Cdr. ET Page and Post Finance Officer Johnny Gomez in destroying the retired flag along with others that had been donated for the occasion. Troop members present with Scout Leader America Rodriguez included Katie Garcia, Jaelynn Garcia, Alexandrya Garcia, Roslyn Flores and Arabella Rodriguez.
