Event set for downtown Cotulla, Saturday, Sept. 28
La Salle County commissioners voted unanimously on Monday, August 12, to make a $4,000 contribution to the annual All Colors Cancer Walk, a fundraising effort scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, September 28.
The locally organized event helps cancer patients and their families by providing fuel cards for transportation, boarding fees and meal funds to those traveling long distances for treatment. The All Colors walk is held at Veterans Park in downtown Cotulla and involves participants of all ages, including elected officials, first responders, civic and charity organizations, advocates, family groups, students and others rallying for greater awareness and to assist the needy.
Participants register to enter the event and also purchase commemorative t-shirts. The fundraiser includes refreshment and vendor booths supporting the cause, and testimonials from cancer survivors and family members.
Event organizer Anna Marroquin told commissioners on Monday that there will be at least six fund recipients this year and noted that participation has increased in each of the seven years she has held the fundraiser.
Last year’s contribution from the county paid for ice chests, tables and other necessities to facilitate the fundraiser as well as fuel cards and other support funding to the recipients, Marroquin said.
To date, the All Colors walk has helped provide financial assistance to at least 38 cancer patients and their families.
“Cancer does not discriminate,” Marroquin said. “Everyone has been affected by it, either as a cancer patient themselves or as the relative or loved one of a cancer patient. It touches all of our lives.
“By holding this event, we are increasing awareness every year of the need for support for the needy, not only those battling cancer but also those who support and provide for them, help transport them and give them care,” she added. “Many people in Cotulla are affected by cancer in some way. More people are becoming aware, and word has spread through advertising, flyers and t-shirts.”
Families and other support groups taking part in the walk as teams will wear matching shirts with a color theme or slogan, not only to honor those for whom they are advocating but also to signal one or more of the many forms of cancer with which loved ones may be afflicted.
The walk from Veterans Park covers several city blocks in a residential neighborhood between downtown and the Frank Newman Middle School. Streets are temporarily closed by law enforcement patrol during the event.
Information on participation registry and how to make donations can be found by calling Marroquin at (847) 454-6473.
