FRIO COUNTY WIC

FRIO COUNTY WIC officials attended the annual Texas WIC Conference August 21-23 in Austin. The event, Celebrating 50 Years: Honoring the Past. Nourishing the Future covered the evolution of the Texas WIC Program over the decades and highlighted future program directions. WIC staff also attended programs covering the best practices in nutrition and breastfeeding education to provide to families. The WIC program was started in 1974 by Dr. David Paige, MD, MPH, MD, MPH in Pineville, Kentucky and soon after the city of Dallas became the first Texas city to start the program. Frio WIC Director Tammy Sanchez, who has been with the program for 19 years, had the opportunity to meet and talk to Dr. Paige at the event.
