DISTRICT 15-3A, DIVISION II FOOTBALL
Dilley opens league play with rival Mustangs Friday night at Gosch Field.
Although he’s thankful for a full week off to rest and recover, Dilley Athletic Director and Head Football Coach David Silva said that coming off a loss, he was anxious to get back on the field last week.
Coming off a loss to Randolph, Silva was itching to play last week to erase the memory of that setback.
“It [the bye week] helped after a physical game versus Randolph, but after a loss, you want to get back out there and get that win to wipe out the feeling after a loss, and a game we, frankly, let slip away,” he said. “Our boys came back though and had a great week of practice.”
With an extra week to prep as they open District 15-3A, Division II play this week, Silva also has payback on his mind as an old rival comes to town.
“Natalia has played some good teams and Dilley-Natalia has always been a good rivalry game,” the coach said of the teams’ history. “But I’m letting the boys and coaches know that in 2019 and 2020, they put a 71-0 and 67-6 whooping on Dilley and if we get a chance to pay back we will.
“Last year we won 42-0, so we’re looking to do even better this year!”
Though the series has largely been lopsided in Dilley’s favor, Natalia has had the Wolves’ number in recent years. The Mustangs won only four contests against the Wolves in 30 years prior to 2019.
Since 2019, Natalia has won four of the last five games although Dilley did turn things around a year ago via a 42-0 shutout.
Game time on Friday is set for 7 p.m. at Gosch Field in Dilley.
