Local runners close season at regional cross country meet in Corpus Christi

REGION IV CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS
Pearsall’s Montes is 49th, Dilley’s Benavides is 31st at highly-competitive event.
The cross country season came to an end last week as Dilley and Pearsall runners competed at the UIL Region 4 Championships on Monday, October 21 at Corpus Christi’s Dugan Stadium.
Pearsall’s Angelyna Montes and Jonathan Viesca were their squad’s only participants at the event.
Montes finished 49th in a field of 181 runners while Viesca was 81st in the boys’ Class 4A division.
Montes posted a time of 14:11.57 while Viesca clocked in at 19:38.94.
With high hopes of making the state meet entering the season, the reality of competing in a dominant Region IV field hit the Wolves at the regional meet last week.
District foe Lytle once against dominated the boys’ field and easily cruised to the regional championship with a mere 60 points. Second place Great Hearts Northern Oaks had 128 points.
Dilley was 14th overall out of 24 teams in attendance.

Josiah Benavides paced the Wolves as he took 31st overall with a time of 18:14.89. Senior Xavier Hernandez was 56 for Dilley with a time of 19:03.55.
Junior Brazos Viesca was 91st at 19:57.20 while senior Julian Cruz was 105th at 20:17.31. Freshman Joshua Montoya placed 117th at 20:30.75 and sophomore Eduardo Torres was 150th with a time of 22:43.60.
There were 180 runners in attendance in the boys’ division.
Dilley’s Lady Wolves were 19th out of 24 teams in contention at the event.
Azaela Espinoza led the team as she was 74th overall with a time of 14:53.60. Zoey Ortegon finished 102nd at 15:48.62 while Jnessa Nickles was 128th at 16:32.17. Jaelyn Rodriguez was 135th at 16:55.51 and Lily Ayala placed 162nd with a time of 17:56.19.
