LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
Frio County has 9,470 registered voters but according to the US Census, 14,520 residents are eligible to vote. Of those, only 4,923 voted in the November 2024 election, which means 50 percent of registered voters did not vote for various reasons.
Pathetically, this also means only 34 percent of eligible voters voted, of which, 21 percent (3,038) of eligible voters voted for Donald Trump and 13 percent (1,844) of eligible voters voted for Kamala Harris, according to election officials’ numbers.
Our President, for decades and probably since 1836, has been selected by the few due to various reasons. It seems that the price of eggs or money is the main reason the Republicans won the 2024 election. The Republican controlled government has promised deporting 10 million unauthorized immigrants. Could we see internment camps, like 1941, where thousands of Japanese Americans were incarcerated? Less workers means new roofs and $50k home roofs since most roofers are immigrants. I see social programs like food stamps, school lunch, public housing, welfare, and other social subsidies being reduced. I also see more oil drilling in our county by minimizing air or water standards that impact long term health. Great for oil workers.
A higher paid oil worker means higher rents due to current shortage of housing in Pearsall. Great for landlords. Locally, I see every student that attends a private school getting a $10,000 check from the state to attend private school. Great for Catholic schools and others. These are exciting times; some will benefit, and some will not.
Reynaldo M Treviño,
Frio County Democratic Chair
