LADY MAVS BASKETBALL
A young squad and few games played early in the season have contributed to a slow start for the Pearsall Lady Mavs this season as the team has dropped eight of ten contests to open the year.
Pearsall is 2-8 this season with the bulk of those contests coming via the annual Maverick Classic Tournament November 21-23 and the Hondo tourney last weekend.
The team went 1-3 at the Classic, falling to Cotulla 39-38, beating Charlotte 36-31, losing to Somerset Academy 37-33 before falling to Hondo in its finale.
“Our regular season game against Hondo was cancelled along with a game against Stockdale on November 26,” PHS Head Coach Victoria Rodriguez said. “It has been difficult with our young team. We have one senior, two juniors, five sophomores and three freshmen making up the team.”
Pearsall took on Bandera in a non-district outing on December 3, falling 48-31 to the Lady Bulldogs.
At the Hondo tournament, Pearsall dropped three of four at the event with its lone victory coming over Cotulla, 47-45.
Pearsall was in Pool play on Thursday with Hondo, Pleasanton and San Antonio Lutheran. The Lady Mavs were 0-2 in action that day, falling to Pleasanton 48-37 and Hondo 45-21.
Pearsall returned to action on Saturday where they lost a decision to Lutheran before bouncing back to post a win over Cotulla.
“Our younger kids got a lot of good reps that are going to be crucial during district play,” Coach Rodriguez said. “Most of our varsity team is made up of freshmen and sophomores so the reps in these tournaments are important to their growth. It’s a young team that is getting a lot of experience, experience that will pay off at the end of the season and especially next year.”
The team hosted Karnes City Tuesday evening in a non-district contest and will host Young Women’s Leadership Academy on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
