Frio County commissioners have been stewards of the federal COVID-19 recovery funds since May 2021 and have made disbursements of the remaining monies across the county.
The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), served as a vital lifeline to the county in 2021 after county officials were tasked with having to cut the budget by nearly a million dollars due to a loss in revenues.
The act authorized counties to expend the funding to organizations that fell into one of several criteria, responding to COVID-19 public health emergencies; workers who performed essential work during the COVID-19 public health emergency by providing premium pay to eligible workers; for the provision of government services to the extent of the reduction in revenue due to the COVID-19 public health emergency relative to revenues collected in the most recent full fiscal year prior to the emergency; and to make necessary investments in water, sewer, or broadband infrastructure.
The court agreed to award $20,000 for the 2024-25 fiscal year to the Frio County Junior Livestock Show; $20,000 is set to be allocated in 2025-26.
According to records filed at the Frio County clerk’s office, the court will disburse $6,000 for the next two fiscal years to Meals on Wheels of San Antonio.
CASA of South Texas, Children’s Alliance of South Texas and Alamo Area Council of Government are slated to receive $10,000 in ARPA funding for the 2024-25 and the 2025-26 fiscal years.
Commissioners approved two disbursements of $25,000 to the San Antonio Food Bank; the Community Council of South Texas will receive two $1,000 payments; the Frio County Childcare Board is slated to be allocated $7,500 for the next two fiscal years; and the Pearsall Chamber of Commerce will receive two $2,500 disbursements.
