LEARNING TO WALK AND TALK
Q: My son doesn’t know how to tie his shoelaces. He says he should not need to know that. I think it’s important, especially since he’s over 25 years old now. Any ideas on this?
Confused Dad in Cotulla
A: What’s wrong with you? As a parent, you should have taught your son how to tie his shoes before his first day of school. It’s right up there with brushing teeth and putting socks in the laundry basket.
Well, maybe you weren’t in the picture when he was learning to walk and talk and do all the normal things that children learn to do. Point is, you dropped the ball somewhere along the way, and now you’re embarrassed. At least you should be.
At his age, he should be able to look it up on the internet. I’m guessing he knows how to do that.
There’s no excuse for not knowing how to tie your shoes when you’re an adult. You should also know how to tie a tie, how to iron dress pants and button-down shirts, and you should know how to use a washing machine. These aren’t mom’s jobs and they aren’t tasks reserved for women.
It’s time to tell your grown-a** son to get with the 21st century, put on his big-boy pants and do what needs to be done.
I don’t know who’s the lazier one here. You waited 25 years to deal with this and he’s been grown-up enough for more than a decade to take the initiative where you clearly failed.
