PEARSALL SOFTBALL
Morales hits 28th career homerun for Pearsall in loss to Devine.
Pearsall opened district softball play last week and got off to a rocky start, losing a 15-3 decision to Devine in the league opener before salvaging the week with a 10-5 win over Somerset on Friday, March 7 to earn the split.
“We opened up district play with a loss to a tough Devine team,” PHS Head Coach Juan Soliz said. “We committed small errors that helped the Arabians get a good lead.”
Pearsall trailed 8-0 by the fifth inning but plated three runs at the bottom of the stanza to pull within 8-3. A seven-run seventh, however, sealed things for the Arabians.
Devine hammered in 25 hits to score its 15 runs while the Lady Mavs were limited to three runs on five hits.
Kristen Morales accounted for most of Pearsall’s offense as she belted a two-run homerun in the fifth to score a pair of runs. Morales was one of three at the plate with a homerun and two RBI. The dinger was Morales’ 28th of her career, a new school mark.

“Thursday we went back to the field and worked on our defense, especially the kind of errors we committed to try and perfect them,” Soliz said of his team. “Friday we hosted Somerset and played great defensively but most importantly offensively.”
After falling behind 1-0 at the top of the second, Pearsall unloaded with nine runs at the bottom of the inning. Somerset added two runs in the third and one in the fourth to cut the margin to 9-4. The Lady Mavs added a run in the fifth and held on for the 10-5 win.
The team belted out 13 hits to score its ten runs but also committed a pair of errors. Somerset was held to five runs on nine hits and also committed two errors.
Alayna Zapata was three for four at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Caitlyn Rodriguez also went three for four with a run scored. Carly Elizondo went two for four with a run scored and Jalyssa Vasquez was two for two hitting with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.
Pearsall took on Floresville on Wednesday evening, March 14 over the Spring Break holiday and will return to action on Tuesday, March 18 at at Uvalde. The team will then host Carrizo Springs on Friday, March 21.
