A Pearsall grandmother and her grandson received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries after an afternoon blaze destroyed their home last week.
Pearsall Volunteer Fire Department Chief Placido Aguilar said firefighters were dispatched to a home on South Puente Street shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.
“We knew there were two occupants inside and that was our first priority,” the fire chief said Monday afternoon. “However, when we got there, they had made it out safely.”

As the fire tore through the home, firefighters struggled to extinguish the blaze that was being enhanced by high winds.
According to the fire chief, a crew of nine volunteer firefighters was able to contain the blaze within 30 minutes.
An elderly woman was treated on scene by emergency medical personnel for minor breathing difficulties; her grandson was transported to Frio Regional Hospital for medical treatment related to smoke inhalation and cuts on his hands.
“The house appears to be a total loss,” Aguilar said. “The source of the fire remains under investigation.”
