Cotulla tops Natalia, roughs up Crystal City to move to 5-0 in district softball.
Cotulla scored five runs in the first two innings against Natalia and shut down Crystal City’s offense over seven innings in winning two more district outings to remain perfect in District 28-3A softball action last week.
The Cowgirls improved to 5-0 in the standings with the pair of victories and will be on the road this week to take on Dilley and Hondo, who are a combined 4-6 in league play. Cotulla also routed both teams in the first round.
In the win over Natalia, the Cowgirls were outhit 12-9 in the contest but chipped away with runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings, while limiting the Lady Mustangs to only four runs on those 12 hits.
Christlyn Munoz went all seven innings for Cotulla, allowing the four runs, but none earned and struck out three.
Sienna Arevalo paced the offense as she was three for four at the plate with a run scored and three RBI and a double.
Erynn Ramirez and EJ Zertuche both went one for two with a run scored by each while Sareen Ramirez was one for three but scored three runs and had an RBI.
Munoz and her defense were dominant in the 12-2 win over Crystal City. Munoz went six innings, surrendering only two hits and two earned runs while striking out ten batters.
The Lady Javelinas had a run in the first and one in the sixth and never threatened other than taking a 1-0 lead early.
Cotulla scored twice at the bottom of the first to go up 2-1 in the first. Two more runs in the second made it 4-1 and three in the third saw the lead go to 7-1.
The Cowgirls plated three more runs in the fifth and tacked on two more in the sixth to seal the win.
Zertuche led the offense, going two for two with two runs scored, an RBI, a double and a homerun.
Alynna Flores was only one for three at the plate but had a three-run homerun and scored a pair of runs.
Ramirez had another big night hitting as she was three for four with three runs scored, two RBI and a double.
Jackeline Alba had an RBI double and scored a run.
Cotulla currently sits in first with a 5-0 mark. Natalia, Lytle and Hondo are all a pair of games back 3-2 each.
Dilley is 1-4 while Crystal City sits winless at 0-5.
