Hughes hits two RBI single to score winning runs in critical district win.
In their only action of the week with an open date last Friday, Pearsall belted out 15 hits and scored three runs in the seventh to rally past and eventually hold on to top Somerset 7-6 Tuesday evening, April 1.
The Lady Mavs overcame deficits of 3-1 and 5-4 to take the win.
“It was a big win in what was a back-and-forth battle for most of the game,” PHS Head Coach Juan Soliz said. “But at the end, it was a good hit from freshman Tori Hughes that brought in the last two runs that helped seal the win.
“Defensively, we had some communication errors but we got through them and fixed them at the right time. I am super proud of the girls for never giving up and fighting to the end. Both Caitlyn and Kristen did great job for us on the mound.”
Senior Caitlyn Rodriguez and junior Jesslyn Gutierrez were both three for four at the plate. Gutierrez scored two runs, had an RBI and belted out a triple. Rodriguez also had an RBI.
Freshmen Jalyssa Vasquez, Makayla Hernandez and Tori Hughes all went two for four in their plate appearances. Hernandez scored a run while Hughes had an RBI.
Kristen Morales had an RBI double while Alayna Zapata scored twice.
Pearsall fell behind 3-1 in the first. After three scoreless innings, the team plated three runs at the top of the fifth to go up 4-3 but Somerset scored twice at the bottom of the stanza to reclaim a 5-4 advantage.
The Lady Mavs rallied in the seventh as they scored three runs on Hughes’ clutch hit and then held Somerset to a single run in their final at-bat to take the win.
Rodriguez went four innings for Pearsall, scattering five hits and allowing three earned runs. She also struck out five. Morales went three innings in relief, surrendering four hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out three.
Pearsall was at Floresville Tuesday evening, April 8 to take on the 3-6 Lady Tigers and will host Uvalde (5-4) on Friday, April 11.
Uvalde is currently a game behind the Lady Mavs in the standings while Somerset and Pleasanton sit tied for fourth. Devine sits in first with a two-game edge on Pearsall due to their season sweept of the Lady Mavs.
