Jerry Pina
A Pearsall man wanted on an arrest warrant was captured last Friday after he was found in possession of narcotics that he reportedly tried hiding in the seats of a law enforcement patrol unit.
Frio County deputies are reporting that they effected the traffic stop of a 2003 Saturn Ion shortly after midnight on Friday, April 25, after noticing that the vehicle had an expiured registration sticker. The deputy attempted to stop the driver near the intersection of South Pecan and East Haynes streets but the vehicle traveled a further three blocks after turning onto Pecos Street.
The driver was identified as 39-year-old Jerry O. Pina, who reportedly tried several times during a roadside interview to reach into his pockets despite directives from a deputy to keep his hands visible.
Pina claimed he was coming from his mechanic’s place of business when he was stopped. Deputies examining the vehicle discovered a bag of methamphetamine on the driver-side floorboard.
Emergency dispatchers confirmed that Pina was listed as wanted for drug possession.
A later search of the deputy’s patrol unit revealed methamphetamine that Pina is believed to have attempted to conceal under the seat. It was during a subsequent search of the patrol unit that deputies discovered an additional bag of methamphetamine and a glass pipe that had been pushed into the vehicle’s center seat.
Pina faces charges of third-degree felony for tampering with physical evidence with the intent to impair, Class B misdemeanor for fleeing from a police officer, and state jail felony possession of a controlled substance.
