They’re beautiful.
They’re elegant.
They’re a sign of new beginnings and for me, they are a sign of pure, genuine love.
Although meant to symbolize the resurrection of Christ with their trumpet shape, the flower symbolizes hope, for me.
Aside from hope, lilies are a symbol of grace.
Grace.
Grace was something taught to me by my grandmother, who I affectionately called Mia.
The woman was amazing. Simply put.
She embodied all of the qualities associated with lilies – purity, new beginnings, hope and grace.
Mia’s presence could calm a storm and her life lessons were based on the foundation of offering grace and finding the good in every situation.
Through the seventeen years I got to spend with her, she made sure the roots she planted were strong enough to support new growth in each changing season of my life.
Her life lessons were sown with loving, patient hands.
When that tomorrow started without her so many years ago, I found my eyes filled with tears, each symbolizing the unconditional love I had for her.
These days, I do not look for her in the rainbows, but in the spring time I feel her presence the most.
Each year, I purchase an Easter lily from our church and plant them near the tree in my front yard that is visible from my front door.
Those lilies have prevailed over freeze and South Texas summer heat, proving that strong roots are the foundation for resilience. The roots, her grace, have cultivated a growth mindset that views setbacks as opportunities for learning and improvement.
Just like her love and grace, it has, and continues to, win over hardships and setbacks placed in my life.
Due to their strong association with motherhood and admiration, lilies are a popular flower given to mothers on Mother’s Day, but in my heart they mean so much more than a simple gift.
