How will our town look in 2075?
Cotulla Mayor Sandra Luna was invited by the school district last week to visit the Ramirez/Burks Elementary School campus where students had been studying projections of the county seat as it may look in half a century.
The special presentation was made by youths in the school’s Gifted & Talented program, which includes those in second through fifth grades, and was aimed at encouraging them to think in terms of future development, urban planning, societal and demographic trends, and infrastructural needs.
According to the district’s director of elementary instructional services, Dr. Eddika Ramos, the opportunity to present a view of Cotulla in the year 2075 “allows our students not inly to apply their learning but also to hone their public speaking skills.”

Mayor Luna was invited to the event in her official capacity and to provide feedback.
Projections for the city in half a century included population and industrial growth, modern architecture and visions of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
“My takeaway, as a city official, my dedication, is to hear the voice of the people and our future leaders in our children,” the mayor said after the event. “I left the presentation with a sense that if our children are concerned about air quality, recycling, drinking water, and growing food, we as leaders should be establishing the means that our children can continue with their vision, a vision of a sustainable Cotulla in 2075 and beyond.”
