COTULLA FOOTBALL
Late rally falls short as injuries mount for Cowboys in league play.
Cotulla dropped a narrow 17-15 decision to Stockdale last Friday in a grueling district showdown and have now dropped to 0-2 in the standings with five games remaining.
A dose of the injury bug has riddled the Cowboys in recent weeks as CHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Esteban Rodriguez said.
“It was definitely a battle from start to finish,” he said. “Unfortunately, somebody has to lose in great matchups like this. We have been hit by the injury bug and we are currently down seven starters on both sides of the ball. “Against Stockdale we had a total of 20 active players total and, although we were a play or two away from a victory, it was definitely a tough situation.”
Rodriguez lauded his players for their effort in the contest.
“I would like to give a huge shoutout to our boys who made no excuses and gave it everything they had,” he said. “There were a handful of skill players that did not come off the field at all (offense, defense, and all special teams). These boys made absolutely no excuses and played their tails off for all four quarters.
“Unfortunately, we fell short for the second week in a row.”
Heading into another tough contest this week against district frontrunner Poth, Rodriguez said he hopes to have several of his starters back.
“We are hoping to return some key players in the near future that will help us in all aspects of the game,” he said. “We are looking forward to the opportunity to go up against a great Poth team. As I have been telling the boys, we will go to war with eleven if that is all we have.
“These boys make no excuses and put it on the line every Friday night. We have definitely had to stress the next man up mentality.”
In a back-and-forth affair against Stockdale, Cotulla fell behind early but their rally fell short in the second half. A second quarter field goal by the Brahmas proved to be the difference in the game.
The two were tied at 7-7 after the first but Stockdale added ten unanswered points in the second to grab a 17-7 halftime lead.
The Cowboys added a touchdown and two-point conversion in the third to pull within 17-15 heading into the fourth but could not crack the scoreboard again.
At 0-2 in district, Cotulla sits a game behind third place Dilley, Karnes City, Natalia and Nixon-Smiley. Stockdale and Poth are tied for first at 2-0.
With five key games remaining, the Cowboys need a quick turnaround in order to secure at least the fourth place spot in a tight district race.
