HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL – WEEK FIVE
Dilley bounces back from Natalia loss with easy 43-7 victory over winless Lions.
Dilley bounced back from a crushing loss to Natalia in their league opener with a rousing 43-7 lopsided win over San Antonio Young Mens Leadership Academy last Friday at Gosch Field during Homecoming weekend.
The game proved to be a final tune-up prior to hitting the heart of a tough district slate for the Wolves as they will be at Stockdale, at Karnes City, and host Nixon-Smiley prior to taking on rival Cotulla. Three of those four teams are currently tied for third in the district standings.
“It was a good bounce back game after a tough loss last week,” DHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach David Silva said. “We played tough defensively and are getting healthy again on the defensive side.
“Offensively, had three running backs go over 100 yards rushing, our offensive line is still the strength of our team. The rest of the schedule will be tough, physical contests every week, starting this week with Stockdale.”
Tough was not in the cards last Friday night as the Wolves rolled to an easy win. A lone kickoff return for a score following a breakdown on kick coverage provided the only bright spot for the Lions.
Dilley rolled up 480 yards of offense, largely on the ground while limiting YMLA to fewer yards, 28, than total plays run, 33.
Juan Garcia and Troy Gonzales both scored a pair of touchdowns apiece.
Gonzales paced the Wolves’ offense with 138 yards on only 12 carries while Garcia added 109 yards on nine totes.

Abel Trevino also had a big night for Dilley as he accounted for 116 yards rushing on only seven carries and a touchdown.
The Wolves ran for 458 yards and added 22 passing yards as quarterback EJ Sambrano connected with Garcia on a 22-yard pass play.
Dilley finished with 20 first downs to YMLA’s two. The Lions finished with 14 passing yards and 14 rushing yards and turned the ball over once.
Garcia opened the scoring with a 24 yard run in the first while Trevino added a ten-yard scamper as Dilley led 14-0 after the first.
The team would then break things open in the second with three scoring drives.
Garcia added a 44-yard touchdown run while Gonzales broke free from 38 yards out as the lead surged to 28-0.
YMLA returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for a score in their lone bright spot of the night.
Sambrano then capped another Dilley drive with a one-yard plunge to end the first half.
Gonzales added a five-yard score in the third as Silva turned to his reserves for much of the second half following that touchdown.
Defensively, Gunner McClain led the team with seven total tackles while Roberto Ardon finished with seven total tackles a sack and a tackle for a loss. Ivan Carcamo added four total tackles, a sack and two tackles for a loss.
Nathaniel Torres added five tackles and Javier Chapa finished with four on the night.
The Wolves will hit the road for a pair of crucial games over the next two weeks as they take on the Stockdale Brahmas this week.
Stockdale sits tied atop the standings at 2-0 in league play and 4-1 overall. The team is coming off a tough 17-15 win over Cotulla. Their only loss of the season is a 32-14 decision to Marion in their season opener.
