REGION IV CROSS COUNTRY
Pearsall’s Montes, Dilley’s Benavides, Cotulla’s Garcia to compete October 31 in Round Rock.

Three local runners have earned bids to compete in the UIL State Cross Country Championships in Round Rock following regional competition this week in Corpus Christi.
Pearsall’s Angelyna Montes, Dilley’s Josiah Benavides and Cotulla’s Pablo Garcia all earned qualifying finishes at their respective Region IV competitions at Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Monday and Tuesday, October 20 and 21.
Montes made her third consecutive regional trip this season and is making her first state trip in three attempts.
Benavides was 14th overall at regionals with a time of 17:24 to earn his first state berth and the school’s first since Noe Garcia went in 2015.
“This marks a historic moment for Dilley Cross Country,” DHS Head Coach James Rodriguez said. “Josiah becomes the first Dilley boy to qualify for state since 2015, when Noe Garcia Jr. represented the Wolves a full decade ago.
“Dilley community, fans, and staff, please join us in celebrating Josiah’s remarkable achievement and wishing him the best of luck as he will be competing amongst the state’s best at Old Settlers Park on Halloween morning.
Congratulations, Josiah, your hard work, dedication, and determination have brought pride back to Dilley Cross Country.”
Cotulla’s Garcia also notched CHS’ first state cross country qualifier in several years as he finished tenth overall in Class 3A action on Monday.
Runners will compete at the UIL state meet on Friday and Saturday morning, October 31 and November 1 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Class 3A boys will hit the course at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, while 4A girls take the course at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday.
