Cotulla came close but could not finish the deal, dropping a dramatic five-set contest to San Antonio Great Hearts Monte Vista in a bi-district volleyball clash last Thursday, October 30 in Poteet.
The Cowgirls trailed early in the first set but rallied to take a 25-21 victory in the opener. Cotulla then lead throughout in the second set and eventually took a 25-19 decision to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
Great Hearts then overcame that deficit, winning three straight sets to earn the 3-2 bi-district victory.
The Lady Lions captured the momentum in the third outing, leading throughout to take a 25-15 decision. They won 25-19 in the fourth and 15-11 in the fifth and deciding set.
“It was a great experience,” CHS Head Coach Christina Few said. “The girls fought hard. It’s obvious it’s not the outcome we had wanted, however, we will continue working hard.
“The girls worked hard for a long time and I’m very proud they reached their goal of making the playoffs. We hope to get back there soon.”
Cotulla trailed twice in the opening set, rallying from a 7-2 deficit early on to cut it 12-10. Great Hearts then extended the margin to 16-11 before the Cowgirls went on a 6-1 run to tie it up 17-17. A 6-3 run saw Cotulla grab a 23-20 advantage and the team then outscored the Lions to win 25-20.
Cotulla led throughout in the second outing, jumping out to leads of 6-4 and 11-6. The Cowgirls led 21-16 at one point and outscored Great Hearts 4-3 down the stretch to take the set.
Leading 2-0, Cotulla then could not get the close plays to fall their way. The Cowgirls trailed for much of the third contest but cut it to 12-8 at one point before eventually falling.
Cotulla made a run in the fourth outing, cutting the margin to 23-19 with three straight service points. Great Hearts countered and held off the Cowgirls to take the 25-19 victory.
Cotulla closed out its season with a 12-19 mark overall and were 7-7 in District 28-3A. The team made a late surge in league play to secure the fourth and final playoff spot.
