Truck driver reported IH-35 collision; had been unable to stop
A 21-year-old Hondo man was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by a commercial motor vehicle on IH-35, prompting highway closure of nearly four hours.
The fatal collision occurred around 4 a.m. near Milemarker 114 on November 22. A report on the case indicates the truck driver contacted emergency dispatchers after his vehicle had struck an object on the highwayside shoulder.
Deputies arrived at the scene to find that the vehicle had sustained damage to its hood and a headlight, but noted that the damage did not appear consistent with the vehicle having struck an animal.
The report noted that officers found no animal hair or blood splatter on the vehicle from the impact.
The driver told deputies he had seen a silhouette on the right-hand side of the road but had been unable to identify what the object was before his vehicle struck it.
Deputies searched the area near the apparent point of impact and found a man’s body lying on the ground. The man, later identified as Travis Pursley, had succumbed to his injuries.
Pursley was pronounced dead at the scene by Frio County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Shanna Gates.
