Wolves fall in district hoops debut to Lytle
Dilley dropped three contests, including their District 28-3A opener in basketball action over the holiday break.
The Wolves dropped an 82-39 non-district tilt to Pearsall, topped First Baptist Academy 57-51 before losing their league opener to Crystal City 114-42 on January 2.
“During the holidays we’ve had some tough matchups,,” DHS Head Coach Ryan Ochoa said. “We started district with Crystal City last Friday, the boys have made a lot of improvement and we look to compete in the upcoming district games.”
Elijah Sambrano paced the Wolves in the Crystal City contest with 17 points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Isaiah Kinsey added 13 points, three boards, an assist and two steals.
The Wolves took on Natalia Tuesday evening and will be at Jourdanton on Friday.
Dilley girls open district play with three losses
A tough finish in their district opener against Lytle seemed to set the tone for a three-game skid as Dilley dropped three straight games to open league play over the holiday break.
Dilley led 27-17 going into the fourth period of their 28-3A opener against Lytle but were outscored 17-5 in the fourth as they dropped a 34-32 decision.
“We’ve started 0-3 in district,” DHS Head Coach Gus Torres said. “We played a really good three and a half quarters against Lytle and just couldn’t hold on.
“We haven’t been in that situation much throughout the year so we struggled in that tight situation. But I feel we will be better prepared for it in the future.”
Dilley then struggled against state-ranked Hondo and Crystal City on the road.
“Danica Cano and Mia Rendon led us in scoring while Mia and Thalyla Obregon have been leading us defensively,” Torres said.
The Lady Owls rolled to a 54-26 decision over the Lady Wolves on December 19 and Crystal City used a hot start to cruise to a 93-14 decision.
Dilley looks to regroup this week as they hosted Natalia Tuesday evening and will be at Jourdanton on Friday.
Natalia is winless at 0-3 in the standings as well while Jourdanton is tied atop the league with Lytle at 3-0.
