DISTRICT 28-3A SOFTBALL
Hondo snaps Cowgirls unbeaten streak, Cotulla remains first in softball standings.
Despite a bump in their record last week, Cotulla remains entrenched atop the District 28-3A softball standings after splitting league outings last week.
Hondo topped the Cowgirls 9-8 in a tight thriller at home on Thursday, April 2, however, Cotulla notched a 19-3 decision over the rival Dilley Lady Wolves on March 31.
The Lady Owls overcame a 6-1 deficit in the second as Cotulla seemed to be in control in the early going.
Cotulla led 8-2 in the fourth, however things began to unravel in the fifth inning.
Hondo scored twice to cut it to 8-4 in the fifth and scored two more runs in the sixth to make it 8-6.
In their final at-bat, the Lady Owls plated three runs to take the 9-8 advantage and then held off the Cowgirls at the bottom of the stanza to secure the come-from-behind victory.
The loss was the first in league play this season for Cotulla but the team remains a game ahead in first place of the 28-3A standings.
Hondo currently sits second at 5-2 with three games remaining.
Lytle and Crystal City are a distant third at 3-4 in district. Dilley and Natalia are each 2-5 in the standings.
In the loss to Hondo, Cotulla plated eight runs on seven hits, largely in the early going of the game.
Christlyn Munoz went the distance on the mound and allowed ten runs on nine hits, three of which were earned and struck out six.
Sareen Ramirez led the offense with a two RBI single. Kaylie Carrizales went two for three with a run scored.
Alexandra Gonzalez scored two runs while Sienna Arevalo, Victoria Medina and Jackeline Alba all scored a run.
The offensive output was counter to the Cowgirls’ efforts in the 19-3 win over Dilley earlier in the week.
Cotulla scored 19 runs on ten hits with four errors.
They limited the Lady Wolves to three runs on one hit and forced 16 errors.
Arevalo was two for five at the plate with a double and three RBI while Gonzalez went two for four with two runs scored and two RBI.
Bella Linares added a double and three runs scored while Alba was two for five with two runs scored, a double and three RBI. Carrizales scored three runs and had an RBI. Ramirez added four runs scored.
Victoria Medina had an RBI and a run scored while Erynn Ramirez also scored a run.
Munoz was dominant in the win as she went seven innings, allowing three runs, one earned on one hit and struck out 13 batters.
Danica Cano had an RBI single for the Lady Wolves only hit.
Izabella Proctor went the distance for Dilley, surrendering 19 runs on ten hits and striking out three. Only five of those hits were earned.
Cotulla was at Lytle Tuesday evening and will take on Natalia at home this Friday. The team closes out the regular season on April 14 at home against Crystal City. Wins in all three games or wins and a Hondo loss, would secure the team its four consecutive district championship.
The Cowgirls have won three straight league titles and three consecutive bi-district championships, as well.
