Frio County 4-H members from three different clubs represented the county at the 4-H State Roundup in College Station June 1-4.
Several members attended the College/Career Fair on June 1, meeting representatives from universities and colleges eager to share insights on degree programs, scholarships and career opportunities in fields like agriculture, food and nutrition science, and leadership.
Competition started on June 2 as qualifiers Reese Roberson and Caden Roberson from the Mavericks 4-H Club took to the Archery field. Caden took first place in the Compound Unaided category while Reese shot his personal best on this particular course in Compound Aided.
Tristyn Shahan (Frio Ag 4-H) was first in the Storyboard Competition in the Jewelry category while Carsyn Shahan (Frio Ag 4-H) was third in Storyboard Competition – Wearable.
Cora Rogers and Lilly Sagemuehl (Mavericks 4-H) teamed up with Lynnlee Surles and Hadley Crisp (Dilley 4-H) to try their hand in the Livestock Skillathon. Although they did not place in the top 10, they learned some valuable information about the contest and know what they need to work on for next year, as they definitely plan on building a team for this competition.

These ladies also joined Teague Moore and Tilden Moore (Mavericks 4-H) along with Lori Moore, Madison Dugosh and Kristen Surles to participate in the statewide community service project titled “Sleep in Heavenly Peace”, where 4-H members at the State Roundup got their hands dirty to build beds for kids in need in Bryan-College Station, literally putting “Their hands to a larger service”.
They ended the evening with a dance with music provided by a Carrizo Springs native and 4-H Alumni, Garrett Talamantes.
Judging competitions kicked off on June 3 including contestants that had previously qualified in order to compete. Haidyn Lindsey (Frio Ag 4-H), Cora Rogers, and Lilly Sagemuehl qualified at the San Antonio Livestock Expo District 12 Horse Competition to compete at state. Lilly had a great judging day and placed ninth overall in Halter Judging and was in the top 25 for the entire competition at 21st overall. The team was also among the top 20 teams, placing 17th.
Lynnlee Surles qualified in Livestock Judging at the Alice competition and placed two classes with perfect scores of 50 and four classes with 42 or above, and had to provide four sets of reasons.
Frio County members Hadley Crisp, Holden Crisp, Henley Crisp, Teague Moore, Tilden Moore, Lilly Sagemuehl, Cora Rogers, Lynnlee Surles ended the evening by attending the Texas Tech Tailgate Party followed by the Mo Betta DJ night.
Addyson Shahan (Frio Ag 4-H) was awarded a $20,000 scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at the Scholarship Banquet on June 4. It is a huge accomplishment to be awarded one of the Texas 4-H Foundation Scholarships.
Throughout the week, the 4-H Roundup also offered workshops in multiple areas like scholarship, dance, and interview that were attended by members and parents. Club members extended their thanks to their parents for the miles driven, money spent, encouragement and everything else that goes with preparing, competing and succeeding in their 4-H endeavors.
Members also thanked Lori Moore (Mavs 4-H) and Kristen Surles (Dilley 4-H) for being chaperones and Madison Dugosh (Mavs 4-H alumni and volunteer) for cooking meals and showing newcomers to Roundup the ropes.
These 14 Frio County 4-H members are already talking about how they will share information learned and cannot wait to go back again next year.
