This month marks the 29th anniversary of School Board Recognition Month which annually recognizes and lauds district trustees for their “unwavering commitment to the district and its students.”
Created in 1995 by the National School Boards Association, the month is celebrated annually by school districts nationwide.
“Our board members play a vital role in our community,” Pearsall ISD Superintendent Dr. Nobert Rodriguez said. “Their dedication, vision, and commitment significantly shape the future of our schools and students.
“Additionally, they provide indispensable leadership and governance, allowing our school district to focus on educating the 2,000 public school children in their care. Furthermore, they bring a profound understanding of the needs and aspirations of their local communities to their role.”
This year’s School Board Appreciation Month is themed “Locally Elected, Community Connected,” and cites the crucial connection between school trustees and their communities. It highlights their status as the largest group of locally-elected officials in the state of Texas.
Working to bridge the concerns of parents and educators while also maintaining public accountability, school boards have been called the community’s caretakers when it comes to public education. Their members work behind the scenes to make the educational experience as inspirational, meaningful, and useful as possible for students as well as those who teach and support them.
School Board Recognition Month provides communities with a moment to recognize these individuals and their work in bringing leadership to schools. Bridging the worlds of parents, teachers, educators, administrators, students, and school leaders, school boards help districts continue to work for the brightest possible future.
Dr. Rodriguez lauded PISD’s trustess for their tireless work, done entirely on a volunteer basis.
“The responsibilities of Pearsall ISD school board members include overseeing, setting goals, managing budgets, and selecting and evaluating the superintendent, actions undertaken voluntarily for the betterment of their communities.”
PISD school board trustees include Board President Marco Reyes, an environmental engineer with the San Miguel Electric COOP and 13 years of service to the district;
Vice-President Matthew Aguilar, Director of Technology with Dilley ISD with nine months of service to the district;
Secretary Juanita G. Rendon, a former local small business owner and active community member with nine months of service to the district;
Sandra Waldrum, Frio County Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 with nine years of service to the district;
Mari Benavides, health insurance agent with three years of service to the district;
