Mavericks dominant in 40-21 season-opening win over San Antonio Edison.
While technically in a rebuilding phase, Pearsall’s young Mavericks came out strong, scoring 40 points through the first three quarters en route to a lopsided 40-21 win over San Antonio Edison in the season-opener last Thursday, August 29.
The Mavericks rolled up over 400 yards of offense, utilized a balanced attack as Kingston Martinez ran for over 100 yards and had three touchdowns, while freshman quarterback Jarren Cabasos was seven of 13 passing for 229 yards and accounted for a pair of scores in his varsity debut.
“We had a good showing week one for the start of the season,” PHS AD and Head Football Coach Ruben DeLeon said of his team’s effort. “The boys came out and executed on both sides of the ball.
“We do have to clean up some of the little things we saw. I thought Kingston and Ethan Vela came out and performed to carry the offense for us by making plays when we needed them. The defense had several guys along our front seven that played well for us. We need to build off of this performance for and carry the momentum into this week’s ballgame.”
After forcing an Edison punt on their first possession, Pearsall briefly sputtered out of the gates, losing yardage on their first two plays. Cabasos then found Martinez out of the backfield on a designed screen pass and he went 53 yards for the score.

Vela capped the Mavs’ second drive with a 35-yard touchdown as he went around the right end and down the sideline for the score.
Edison’s first points of the contest came late in the first as they went in from a yard out. The drive was aided by a pair of 15-yard penalties on Pearsall for a facemask and unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Mavs were quick to respond, tacking on a pair of scores to grab a 28-7 lead late in the half. Martinez went in from 10 yards out and JM Gutierrez then added a four-yard score for Pearsall.
Edison capped their longest drive of the night as the half expired, going in from five yards out. The Bears converted a fourth and long on the possession, leading to their second score.
Pearsall would pull away in the third as Cabasos snuck into the endzone from two yards out and Martinez converted the hat trick, scoring his third touchdown of the night on a 23-yard scamper.
Edison added a cosmetic score on one of Pearsall’s few mishaps on the night. Cabasos tried to hit a wide receiver in the flat but the ball was bobbled into the air and Edison picked it off and went 12 yards the other way for their final score of the night.
Pearsall capped their evening with 424 yards of offense, 229 through the air and 195 rushing yards and 13 first downs.
Martinez had 158 yards of total offense and three touchdowns while Vela added 139 total yards and a score.
Cabasos connected with five different receivers, hitting Abel Elizondo twice for 69 yards. He also had completions to Jaiden Ortiz, Alejandro Briseno and Martinez and Vela.
Pearsall returns home this week to host old rivals Crystal City. The Javelinas are 1-0 this season, having topped Ingram Tom Moore 26-9 in their opener last Friday.
