Camping in the South Texas Plains? I mean, sure you might find a ground squirrel on the prairies… or even some great fat squirrels near the rivers… but you want to go camping? Of course you do!
Along the path of the Frio and Nueces rivers, much further downstream than our familiar territory, there are two state parks that offer low cost and fairly accessible camping. Both under the management of Texas Parks and Wildlife, Choke Canyon State Park and Lake Corpus Christi State Park are located in Calliham and Mathis, Texas, respectively. Both parks offer tent and recreational vehicle camping, as well as water and electricity hookups, restrooms, drinking water, and showers.
Each of these parks has its own reputation as a place for fishing. Recreation offered at both parks includes fishing and boat launches, as well as hiking opportunities. Since we already squirreled off on bird migrations through Texas, we already know that anywhere has the potential to be a birding destination.
Though South Texas isn’t really known for it’s comfortable temperatures, there are times in the year that it’s feasible to believe I would be willing to go camping in a tent. Check the schedules, because campgrounds can be closed for different reasons, even though there are no listed limitations for how long you can camp at each park.
Do you think you would go camping in South Texas?
