DILLEY WOLVES BASKETBALL
With Dilley having been eliminated from the football playoffs recently, the Wolves’ basketball team played its game with a varsity roster last week, dropping a 52-40 decision to D’Hanis in non-district action.
Freshman Isaiah Kinsey paced the Wolves with 20 points in the loss.
“It was our first game back with our guys from football,” DHS Head Coach James Rodriguez said. “We only had one practice under our belt.
“Our guys were out of basketball shape, so we couldn’t press as much as I would’ve liked but they showed good effort. Overall, we have much better depth this season compared to the past couple of years.”
D’Hanis led 16-11 after the first and then built a 33-21 lead at halftime. Dilley played on even terms in the second half but could not make up ground in the 12-point loss.
The team dropped to 0-3 this season, having previously lost 78-37 and 77-41 decisions to Utopia and Laredo Harmony with a largely junior varsity group.
“We return only two of 12 varsity players from last season, but the ones we have right now will be okay once district comes around as they get some more basketball under their feet and get into shape,” Coach Rodriguez said. “We have three freshman playing at the varsity level, with two of them starting and one coming off the bench.
“We’re looking to get back into the playoffs as we narrowly missed out last year, falling to Hondo by less than 5 points twice.”
Dilley hosted Nixon-Smiley Tuesday evening in a non-district contest and will then be at the Karnes City tournament this weekend.
