Following complaints from residents regarding illegal dumping in several areas of the community, the city of Pearsall has received grant funding to install cameras in hopes of deterring unlawful trash disposal.
The Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) has awarded the city three cameras through its Reconyx Illegal Dumping Camera Program grant.
According to a press release by Public Information Officer Bianca Ramirez, the city’s initiative is to enhance the community’s environmental quality and public health by implementing advanced surveillance technologies in strategic locations susceptible to illegal waste disposal.

The cameras are equipped with motion detection and high-resolution imaging with the ability to capture clear photos during the night and day.
Illegal dumping occurs when someone disposes of litter or solid waste in an unauthorized location. The violation can carry a hefty fine or jail time.
In Texas, the criminal offense is a violation of the Health and Safety Code, Chapter 365, and can be prosecuted at the county or district level contingent on the amount of trash that is disposed of.
According to records filed at City Hall, the cameras are slated to be installed within the next four to six weeks.
In November, councilors approved the purchase of a 2024 truck and trailer to be used in the initiative; a purchase, according to city administration, for which AACOG grant monies will cover $41,000 of the total price.
