PEARSALL MAVERICKS BASKETBALL
Mavs win four straight to claim Mathis tournament championship.
Pearsall swept the field, winning four straight contests to take the overall championship at the Mathis basketball tournament on Saturday, December 13.
The Mavericks routed the field, taking lopsided victories in three of the four outings and topping Ingleside by eight points for the title on Saturday.
“I was really proud of how the boys competed throughout the tournament,” PHS Head Coach Jeff Viesca said. “They played with great energy, discipline, and unselfishness on both ends of the floor.
“Defensively, they hustled and created turnovers, and offensively, they shared the ball and took good shots.”
Senior Jeremy Rodriguez was named the tournament Most Valuable Player for his efforts at the event but the team’s overall play is what impressed Coach Viesca the most.
“What impressed me most was their ability to find a way to continue winning when things are not in our favor,” he said. “And their willingness to play for one another. It was a total team effort, and I am proud of the way they represented our program.”
Ayden Rodriguez led the Mavs in scoring at the tournament, averaging 18-2 points per game in Pearsall’s four victories.

He led the team with 18 points in a 73-29 win over Lasara.
Aiden Saldivar added 13 points in the win while Jeremy Rodriguez finished with 11 points.
Pearsall then toppled Ben Bolt 66-18 for their second win of the tournament. Rodriguez went for 19 points in that victory while Saldivar added 15 points. Center Devin Castillo finished with eight points for Pearsall in the lopsided win.
In action on Friday, the Mavericks held off Mathis to claim a 13-point 56-43 decision.
Rodriguez finished with 16 points in that outing while Saldivar added 11 points. Brayden Cabasos also pitched in ten points for Pearsall.
The Mavericks then topped Ingleside 44-36 for the tournament championship behind a 20 point effort from Rodriguez. Jeremy Rodriguez also finished with 18 points for Pearsall.
Pearsall wrapped up its tournament schedule with the team title at Mathis and will host a pair of home games this week. The Mavs hosted San Antonio Kennedy Tuesday evening and will take on Dilley on Friday in a 7:30 p.m. clash.
Pearsall opens District 27-4A play on December 2 with a home contest against the Pleasanton Eagles.
