Investigators indicate drivers’ errors possibly to blame

A two-vehicle collision in downtown Pearsall Saturday evening claimed the lives of two teenagers and left a third with serious injuries.
Pearsall police confirmed Tuesday morning the crash remains an active investigation.
According to a press release Sunday afternoon, January 18, Pearsall police confirmed the two-vehicle collision happened at 5:47 p.m. at the intersection of Oak and Trinity streets.
Reports filed at the Frio County Sheriff’s Office indicate a 2021 Ford F-250 driven by 50-year-old Cameron Brewer of Tennessee collided with a black 2005 Toyota Scion.
The driver of the Toyota was identified as 17-year-old Brett Reyes, who was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio and was released the following day.
Passengers James Chavera, 18, and Gabriel Carrizales, 19, were transported to Frio Regional Hospital but succumbed to the injuries they had sustained in the crash.

Details surrounding the cause of the collision are under investigation, but preliminary findings indicate a combination of driver errors. According to Pearsall Police Lieutenant Nathaniel Ximenez, one driver admitted to speeding and the other driver admitted failing to yield the right of way.
“We are still waiting for the Department of Public Safety to conduct an accident reconstruction, but it is marked,” Ximenez said.
According to the press release, the investigation remains open and no charges have been filed against either driver.
Carrizales graduated from Pearsall High School in June 2025; Chavera was set to walk the stage in May.
A visitation for Chavera is scheduled on Monday, January 26, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Trevino Royal Oaks Funeral Home; a mass in his honor will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 27, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Carrizales’ funeral arrangements were not made available as of press time.
