Ex-Maverick has 26 years’ experience in education

Pearsall ISD trustees went the homegrown talent route in selecting PHS alumnus Joey Cantu as the newest athletic director during a Wednesday, January 21, meeting of the school board.
School officials appointed a committee to aid in the selection process and PISD Superintendent Dr. Jodi Spoor said they were impressed with Cantu’s credentials and his personal connection to the school district.
“The committee was impressed by Coach Cantu’s experience, accomplishments, and his desire to give back to his hometown,” Dr. Spoor said. “With more than two decades in education and a strong background in leading successful athletic programs, we are confident he will provide outstanding leadership for our district. We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our students, staff, and the Pearsall community.”
Cantu is a 26-year veteran in education and athletics. He currently serves as Boerne Champion’s head tennis coach and also spent 25 years in that capacity at Boerne ISD, earning multiple state titles with the Greyhounds.
Cantu said he is elated with the opportunity to return to Pearsall and lead the charge as its athletic director.
“I am absolutely excited about coming home to my hometown,” he said. “While one of my first priorities will be finding a head football coach, I also want to ensure that every sport receives the attention it deserves.
“We will celebrate all sports, and I want everyone to feel like they are part of something special.”
School officials said Cantu will assume his new role by the end of the month.
