The driver of a northbound freight truck required extracting from his vehicle cab Thursday afternoon, January 29, after a roll-over crash that required nearly 12 hours of clean-up.
Reports from the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office and the county’s fire rescue service indicate investigations are still underway into the possible causes of the crash in which the freighter began disintegrating while traveling at Milemarker 80 between Millett and Dilley at around 1:50 p.m.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find that the freighter had veered out of the northbound lanes of the interstate, crossed the roadside median and tipped onto its side on the east access road. The freight truck cab was found to have become separated from the rest of the rig.
The driver was found in the overturned wreckage of his cab and required airlifting from the scene to a San Antonio hospital.
The commercial hauler had been carrying heavy automotive parts in its box trailer. Wrecker crews and additional freighters were summoned to clear the site and were on scene until after 1 a.m. the following day.
The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the case as well as a secondary crash that occurred at the same place on the interstate during the accident response. Reports indicate two freight trucks were involved in a rear-end smash during a traffic slow-down an hour after officers had responded to the roll-over.
