Elderly local had significant drug cache, deputies say

A routine afternoon traffic stop in Frio County escalated into a short vehicle pursuit and a significant narcotics seizure last week, with an elderly driver in cuffs on felony charges.
Sheriff’s deputies are reporting they attempted to effect a traffic stop on the driver of a 2012 Ford F-150 near the intersection of Business IH-35 and the interstate’s west access road at around 1:50 p.m. Thursday, June 18, after noting the vehicle appeared to have a defective light.
The driver, later identified as 69-year-old Alberto Trujillo, failed to pull over and led deputies on a brief pursuit before coming to a stop near CR 1005.
Deputies discovered Trujillo had 35 grams of heroin in his possession.
Trujillo was taken into custody and faces a first-degree felony charge for manufacture and delivery of heroin and a third-degree felony charge for evading arrest or detention with a vehicle.
A 42-year-old female passenger traveling with Trujillo was released.
“Removing this quantity of illegal narcotics from our communities effectively cuts off a local supply,” Sheriff Peter Salinas said of the traffic stop. “These drugs represent hundreds of individual doses that would have otherwise ended up sold directly on local street corners. We remain committed to protecting our neighborhoods and stopping the flow of illegal drugs at every level.”
