“Nobody would have ever seen him...”

A fourth grader at Pearsall Intermediate School, Haylie was recognized last week by the Pearsall Police Department after being credited with saving the life of a local man who had fallen into a drainage ditch on the south side of town.

It was the 10-year-old’s “nosiness” and persistence that brought help to the injured man.

Her dad, Ernesto Rodriguez Jr., tells the story of that fateful day May 3. “We were going to my mom’s house, and I saw a man walking,” he noted. “Then, when I parked and was going to open the car door, Haylie yelled, ‘Dad, Dad, he fell into the ditch.’”

“I just saw somebody’s foot go up, and I reacted,” Haylie recalled. “I screamed to my dad, but he thought I was just seeing things.”
