A Promise kept

Apromise made sixty-nine years ago came to fruition on a Saturday afternoon in May 2019. The family of Private First Class Herschel Riggs have gathered to welcome their soldier home, fulfilling that promise to a loved one and inspiring hope in others.

It all began in 1950. Although World War II had already ended, it still remained a time of conflict. The Cold War was a time of geopolitical tension between the Soviet Union with its satellite states and the United States with its allies, which then resulted in the separation of Korea. Korea, now two sovereign states, was divided by a dangerous border. With both leaders of the North and South claiming to be the sole, legitimate government of all Korea, their conflict escalated into war.

Lillie Lund was a mother of two, living in Rio Grande City during this period. Her son, Herschel Mearl Riggs, was one of thousands who served in the military during the Korean War (June 25, 1950- July 27, 1953).
