Juan Dominguez

“Coach” Juan Rivera Dominguez, died on Saturday, May 4, 2019 after battling cancer. He was born on August 29, 1949.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Maria Felicita and Bonifacio Dominguez, brother, Lucio Dominguez, sister, Maria De La Cruz and nephew, Juan Manuel De La Cruz.

He is survived by his wife, Eva, daughters, Laura A. Dominguez and Maristela M. Mciver (Brooks), five grandchildren, Diego E., Quince E., Juan, David and Maya M., niece, Olga L. Maldonado and her family in Carrizo Springs, and two nieces and a nephew in La Mesa, Texas.

Fondly remembered as ‘El Coach’ in the Cotulla Independent School District, he served over 35 years as a coach and educator for multiple South Texas School Districts until his official retirement from Cotulla in 2008.

Coach Dominguez dedicated himself to many endeavors, including South Texas politics. He was an active Chairman in the La Salle County Democratic Party. He was also elected as Mayor of Cotulla from 2004-2006, after serving 12 years as a city council member. For 12 years, he coordinated the La Salle County Wild Hog 5K Run with community support. In 2011, he was sworn in as a Cotulla ISD School Board Trustee, which he served for the remaining eight years of his life. His kind and inspiring soul also extended up north each year, working with migrant students and families through the Moorhead Public Schools Summer Migrant Program in Minnesota.

Visitation was held Friday, May 10, from 1:30 to 9 p.m. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. at Castle Ridge in Crystal City. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, May 11.
