Special teams recovery, interception force overtime; late turnover costs Pearsall.

Pearsall forced overtime in a game they trailed for much of, but ultimately a pair of turnovers proved costly as the Mavericks fell to the San Antonio Burbank Bulldogs 20-14 in double overtime last Thursday in their 2019 debut.

“It was a really hard fought game,” PHS AD and Head Football Coach Edward Bocanegra said. “Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong side of the outcome, but I am extremely pleased how the boys continued to fight throughout the game.”

Pearsall fell behind early after the team's first turnover of the season. The two teams exchanged offensive possessions and a defensive struggle ensued but Burbank pounced on a loose ball at the Maverick 27 to put them in business.

They would score on a Matthew Salazar two-yard run to go up 7-0 late in the first.

Pearsall would respond with a 20-yard scoring strike from quarterback Brady Blackburn to Ethan Waldrum midway through the second.
