Cowboys win second straight nail-biter, hold off Lytle in district opener move to 5-0.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Cotulla has nearly equalled its win total of the last two season's combined following a narrow 14-12 win over Lytle last Friday in the District 15-3A, Division I opener for both teams.

With its 5-0 start, Cotulla has assured itself of a non-losing season for the first time in five years.

“This was a great win on the road and in our first district game,” CHS AD and Head Football Coach David Silva said. “Penalties continue to hurt us and we have to eliminate those but being 5-0 is an awesome feeling. I'm happy for the boys, staff, and our community.”

Cotulla's quick start has kickstarted its dormant football program and brought a spark back to Myers Memorial Stadium.

“It's a testament to the work all have put in since last November,” Silva said. “As I tell the boys, and we haven't played a perfect game yet.”

Following a quick 3-0 start, the Cowboys have struggled offensively the last two weeks, needing a strong defensive effort to hold on in narrow wins over Carrizo Springs and Lytle.

Cotulla struck first against the Pirates, cracking the scoreboard on a 17-yard pass play from Eliahs Jones to Thallan Olivarri in the first quarter.

Special teams proved crucial as Ulysses Contreras returned at kicked and converted after both Cotulla touchdowns to ultimately provide the difference in the game.
