Leal is third at Dilley meet

Zaine Leal finished third overall while three Lady Mavs medaled in action at the Wolf Pack Cross Country Invitational on Saturday in Dilley. “Zaine led the Mavericks again with a third place finish and he continues to improve every week,” PHS Head Coach John Hernandez said. “Esmer, Ebony and Emma led the Lady Mavericks as the team had a strong showing this week.” The coach also lauded the efforts of his seventh grade boys team as they captured the team title at the event. Seven Lady Mavs competed at the event and were led by Gonzales, who was seventh overall. Ebony Garza was 11th, Emma Hernandez came in 20th and Kiana Kebbi was 21st, just narrowly missing out on a medal. Giselle Castillo was 23rd for Pearsall while Lorena Trevino was 30th and Mikayla Smart finished 39th. Leal paced the boys in third while Josh De Los Santos was 21st. Frank Ellis came in 30th and Jaiden Ortiz was 44th for Pearsall. In sub-varsity action, Jose Garces won the JV boys' division title with a first place finish. Christian Ramon was fifth and Gabriel Martinez took 28th for the Mavs. Pearsall's JV girls also put in a strong effort as three athletes finished in the top 15. Lauren Shafer was third for the team, Saynika Weaver finished ninth and Hailey Hernandez was 13th.
