WCC’s Allen named Jefferson Award nominee at Laredo ceremony

Cotulla Woman’s Club member Joyce “Cissy” Allen was honored at the Laredo Area Heroes 2019 Jefferson/Acorn Award Ceremony for public service.

Allen is one of twelve individuals chosen by their non-profit organizations as “Volunteer of the Year”. The coveted Jefferson Award was established in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to serve as an equivalent to the Nobel Prize for public service in America.

Cissy is a ten-year member of the Woman’s Club of Cotulla. Prior to becoming an official member of the club, she assisted her mother and other club members with transportation to various events. She volunteered to type and assemble the yearbooks for the club for 12 years, audited the club’s financial ledger for four years and has created tickets for fundraisers and events. Professionally, Cissy is a Science teacher and has used her knowledge to be an advocate to the Woman’s Club on conservation, education, and history over the years.

Dilley Public Library March Report

DILLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS

Dilley home school students visited the library on March 5, and enjoyed the library’s Robotic Kits, building and constructing movable projects. Some of the children played educational games on the computers and tablets. The children were invited to stay and have their lunch in the city’s convention center. The students, parents and grandparents had a wonderful time at the library utilizing and enjoying their visit with plans to return again.

The students and parents also received a visit from DPD Chief Fonseca, which they enjoyed. The parents appreciated Chief Fonseca’s visit and the time he took to talk to everybody.

Cotulla Garden Club tours Brush Country Museum

The Cotulla Garden Club recently toured the Brush Country Museum as part of its regular meeting on Thursday, March 14.

The meeting was held at the Alexander Memorial Library at 10:00 a.m. and was called to order by President Elda Nora Quintanilla. Opening prayer and pledge to our flag was presented by Kay Childers. Roll call for today was “Our Favorite Antique”, some responses were given such as, my husband, myself and some about furniture handed down by special family members.

The Secretary’s report read by Kay Childers was approved by Marianne Hall and Annette Schwab. Patsy Leigh gave the treasurer’s report, motion carried to be approved.

Thompson Ranch wins SA Rodeo title

The Thompson Ranch of Pearsall, a sixth-generation ranching family claimed the 2019 San Antonio Ranch Rodeo Championship at the annual Stock Show and Rodeo.

“These South Texas cowboys pulled off a win against the toughest competition that has ever rode in the arena at the San Antonio Ranch Rodeo,” Ranch owner Lew Thompson said.

Rice Ranch, winners of the $50,000 ranch rodeo in 2018, Bonds Ranch, winners of the 2018 Fort Worth Stock Show Ranch Rodeo, Bryan Ranch, winners of the 2017 $50,000 Ranch Rodeo and the 2018 San Antonio Ranch Rodeo finals were among the teams in attendance.

Golden Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Raul and Rosario Mainez of Pearsall celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, February 23, 2019. The couple renewed their vows at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and held a luncheon and dance in their honor at the A&D Ballroom. On behalf of the Mainez family they wish to thank all their friends and realtives who joined them on this special occasion. They also wish to thank everyone for the well wishes, gifts and support.

Sturges discusses Caladium bulbs at Cotulla Garden Club meeting

The Cotulla Garden Club gathered at the Church of God 7th Day at Artesia Wells on February 7 for its regular meeting.

There was fifteen members and one guest present. Our roll call for the meeting was “Our Favorite Candy.”

The meeting was called to order by President Nora Quintanilla. The prayer and pledge was led by Amanda Menke. The Secretary’s report given by Kay Childers was read and approved. Our treasurer’s report was given by Nancy Seals. These reports were approved by all members.

Food from the Heart

CHICKEN AND SHRIMP

CARBONARA

This recipe was generously shared by Olive Garden. One bite of this delicious dish and ordering out may become a thing of the past.

Ingredients:

Marinated chicken or shrimp 1 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 cup hot water 1 Tbsp Italian seasoning 1 Tbsp chopped garlic 3 lbs chicken strips or large shrimp, peeled and deveined

Sauce

1 cup butter 1 1/2 tsp chopped garlic 3 Tbsp bacon bits 3 Tbsp flour (all purpose) 1 cup Parmesan cheese (grated) 4 cups heavy cream 4 cups milk 1/4 cup bacon base

Cooked pasta

1/2 tsp black pepper 2-14 oz boxes of any long pasta (spaghetti, linguine, etc.) cooked using instructions on package 1/4 tsp salt

PHS AFJROTC team among 13 seeking opportunity to speak to ISS crew

Pearsall’s Air Force Junior ROTC team is one of 13 from across the country whose proposal to participate in the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS), has been selected to advance to the second phase of the selection process.

The ARISS program allows students worldwide to talk directly with crew members of the International Space Station, inspiring them to pursue interests in careers in science, technology, engineering and math, and engaging them with radio science technology through amateur radio.
