Hurd delivers books donated from Library of Congress

A number of local youth and their parents welcomed Congressman Will Hurd during a special event on Friday, August 31.

The Congressman donated an assortment of children’s books to the library from the Library of Congress.

During his visit, Hurd discussed the importance of reading and commended the library staff for their efforts to promote literacy in the community.

Cotulla native completes humanitarian mission in Guatemala

Garcia is in final year of residency at UTHSC in SA

Dr. Jose A. Garcia M.D. is wrapping up the last year of what has proven to be a busy residency, specializing in anesthesiology at UTHSC in San Antonio.

The 2005 graduate of Cotulla High School has been working long hours with numerous call shifts during his rotations at University Hospital, Audie Murphy VA and Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

NEW IN TOWN

NEW IN TOWN - Jesse Franklin is the new pastor at the First United Methodist Church in Cotulla. He and his wife Amy have two children, Everly and Jesse. The Franklin family moved from Schertz and Jesse is a former oil field worker. Franklin says he is excited to come to Cotulla and is excited to meet members of the community. He is inviting them to ‘come in and talk shop or just sit and have a cup of coffee’.

TIME TO STUDY

La Salle County Deputies Jose Cardenas III, Jose Solis and Cesar Villarreal were among dozens of law enforcement officers from across South Texas attending all-day classes in the county’s Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday and Friday, July 25 and 27, taught by TCOLE Instructor Robert Armstrong on de-escalating situations of crisis or anguish among members of the public, with a special emphasis on the new Sandra Bland Act and the need for officers to use critical decision-making techniques to provide appropriate response to persons displaying signs of mental distress.

Cotulla High School Students Attend NHI Leadership Conference

Cotulla High School Juniors and Seniors recently participated in the National Hispanic Institute Summer Leadership Program with juniors attending the eight-day Lorenzo De Zavala Leadership program. The event provided students an opportunity to learn about future government policies and projects and allowed students to network with others from over 25 states and work on building a strong government.

Pearsall’s Leal earns safe driver complete

Landstar System, Inc. has recognized Carlos Leal of Pearsall, as a One Million Mile Safe Driver during a ceremony earlier this month.


Leal is one of 138 men and women who make up the Class of 2017 Landstar Million Mile Safe Drivers recently honored at an awards ceremony held earlier this month in Savannah, Georgia, recognizing their outstanding safety records and professionalism behind the wheel.


During his career with Landstar as an independent truck owner-operator, Leal has driven more than one million consecutive miles without a preventable accident.

DeLaGarza earns La Salle A&M Club scholarship

Alekzandra DeLaGarza was recently named the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship from the La Salle County A&M Club. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abram DeLaGarza of Cotulla and plans to attend Texas A&M University, College Station where she will pursue a degree in Education.

FOR THEIR EFFORTS

CASA volunteers in La Salle County were recently honored during a dinner for their efforts in working with foster children. There are a number of foster children in La Salle and others in CPS care. According to CASA representative Francie Gasch, the hard work by volunteers and the advisory committee CASA is on each case. Two new La Salle volunteers just completed CASA training. Several volunteers were not in attendance at the event as they were out of town. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer, making a donation to CASA, or helping with fundraisers can call Francie Gasch at (830) 267-1025.
